That said, the veterinary literature suggests that certain low-phenol oils carry less inherent risk. Oils to Keep Away From Both Dogs and Cats

How to Diffuse Essential Oils as Safely as Possible

Recognizing the Signs of Essential Oil Toxicosis
Clinical signs of essential oil poisoning depend on the type and concentration of the oil and the route of exposure, and they can appear within minutes to hours.
From ingestion or skin exposure, common signs include vomiting, lethargy, drooling, ataxia (loss of coordination), and loss of appetite. More serious signs can include muscle tremors, low blood pressure, slow heart rate, low body temperature, seizures, rear-limb paralysis, skin irritation or burns, and, in severe cases, liver or kidney failure.
