Research supports several health benefits—from reduced anxiety to improved sleep—though safe usage requires dilution and careful handling.

Essential oils have been used for centuries, from ancient Egyptian embalming rituals to traditional Ayurvedic medicine. Today, they’ve moved well beyond niche wellness circles. That kind of growth reflects a genuine, sustained shift in how people approach health and personal care.

Yet for all their popularity, essential oils remain widely misunderstood. Are they medicine? Fragrance? Somewhere in between? Understanding what essential oils actually are—how they’re made, what they contain, and how they interact with the body—makes it much easier to use them effectively and safely.

What Makes an Oil “Essential”?

The word “essential” doesn’t mean indispensable—it refers to the “essence” of a plant. According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), essential oils are obtained through mechanical pressing or distillation and retain the natural smell and flavor of the plant they come from.

Each essential oil has a unique chemical composition that affects its scent, how it’s absorbed by the body, and the effects it produces. That composition can even vary between plants of the same species, depending on growing conditions, climate, and harvesting methods. Synthetic oils—those created in a laboratory to mimic a natural scent—are not considered true essential oils.

This distinction matters. The therapeutic properties associated with essential oils stem from the complex mixture of naturally occurring compounds present in the plant, not from artificial reproduction of its smell.

How Are Essential Oils Made?

The concentration involved in producing essential oils is staggering. As integrative medicine specialist Dr. Yufang Lin of Cleveland Clinic explains, it takes approximately 250 pounds of lavender flowers to produce just one pound of lavender essential oil. For rose oil, the ratio is even more extreme—roughly 5,000 pounds of rose petals per pound of finished oil. This explains both the potency of essential oils and, in many cases, their cost.

Several extraction methods are used commercially, each suited to different plant materials.

Steam Distillation

Steam distillation dominates the industry, accounting for more than 93% of global essential oil production volume, according to Elchemy. The process works by passing steam through plant material. Heat causes the plant’s aromatic compounds to volatilize, and those vapors travel with the steam into a condenser. As the mixture cools, the essential oil separates from the water as a distinct layer—collected and bottled as the finished product.

Steam distillation suits herbs, flowers, and leafy plant materials particularly well. Its efficiency and scalability have made it the standard for commercial production.

Cold Pressing

Cold pressing is used exclusively for citrus oils—lemon, orange, bergamot, and grapefruit, among others. The oil is mechanically pressed from the peel of the fruit without the application of heat. This preserves heat-sensitive aromatic compounds and produces particularly fresh, bright-smelling oils. The trade-off is that cold-pressed citrus oils may cause photosensitivity on the skin when exposed to sunlight.

Solvent Extraction and CO₂ Extraction

For delicate botanicals that can’t withstand the pressure of steam—jasmine and neroli, for example—solvent extraction uses food-grade solvents such as hexane or ethanol to draw out aromatic compounds. The solvent is then removed, leaving behind a concentrated extract. This method achieves higher yields than steam distillation for low-yield or resinous plant materials.

CO₂ extraction represents the premium end of the spectrum. Using pressurized carbon dioxide as a solvent, this method produces yields of 2–15% and delivers ultra-premium quality oils with a fuller chemical profile. The process requires significant capital investment but preserves even the most volatile compounds intact.

The Chemistry That Makes Essential Oils Work

Essential oils aren’t a single compound—they’re complex mixtures of dozens, sometimes hundreds, of naturally occurring chemicals. The predominant classes include monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, esters, and aldehydes. Each class behaves differently under heat, interacts differently with the body, and contributes differently to the oil’s overall character.

Lavender oil, for instance, is rich in linalool and linalyl acetate—esters known for their calming properties. Peppermint oil derives much of its cooling, invigorating quality from menthol. Eucalyptus oil contains significant concentrations of eucalyptol, a compound associated with respiratory support and antimicrobial activity.

This chemical complexity is central to how essential oils produce their effects. When inhaled, aromatic compounds travel through the olfactory system and interact with receptors connected to the limbic system—the brain’s center for emotion, memory, and autonomic functions. When applied to the skin, fat-soluble compounds can penetrate the skin barrier and enter the bloodstream. Different routes of exposure produce different physiological responses, which is why method of application matters considerably.

What Do the Research and Major Health Organizations Say?

Studies reviewed by the Cleveland Clinic indicate that essential oils may help boost mood, reduce anxiety and pain, improve sleep quality, kill bacteria and funguses, reduce nausea, relieve headaches, and reduce certain types of inflammation. These benefits are generally associated with aromatherapy use or careful topical application.

Frankincense oil, for example, has shown anti-inflammatory properties in published research, with studies suggesting it may also improve asthma symptoms and potentially inhibit gum disease. Peppermint oil has demonstrated antimicrobial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties, and research published in peer-reviewed journals indicates it may help reduce gut spasms in people with irritable bowel syndrome. Lemon oil used in aromatherapy has been studied for its potential to improve cognitive function in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

That said, health authorities consistently note that essential oils are a form of complementary medicine. They support—rather than replace—conventional medical treatment. The research base, while growing, is not uniformly strong across all claimed applications.

The Most Widely Used Essential Oils and Their Benefits

Understanding individual oils helps in making informed choices about which ones to use and for what purpose.

Lavender oil is among the most versatile and well-studied. Dr. Lin describes it as her go-to oil for its broad range of gentle, well-documented benefits, including stress relief, sleep improvement, and pain management. Before the discovery of antiseptics, lavender was even used as a cleaning agent in clinical settings.

Peppermint oil is known for its cooling, energizing quality. Research supports its role in easing headaches, fighting fatigue, supporting digestion, and improving memory and attentiveness. It is anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antimicrobial.

Eucalyptus oil is a staple during cold and flu season. Its ability to open nasal passages and ease congestion is widely recognized. Eucalyptus oil also demonstrates antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, with research suggesting it may help relieve pain and fight the herpes simplex virus.

Tea tree oil is primarily used for its antiseptic, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. Applied topically to acne-prone skin, it has been shown to accelerate resolution of blemishes. It is also effective against athlete’s foot and ringworm when diluted with a carrier oil.

Frankincense oil, often referred to as the “king of oils,” carries a woody, spicy scent and has been studied for its effects on inflammation, mood, and sleep. It is a common ingredient in premium skincare formulations.

Lemon oil extracted from the citrus peel helps reduce anxiety and depression, ease nausea, reduce pain, and kill certain bacteria. It is safe for aromatherapy and topical use but should not be applied before sun exposure due to photosensitivity risk.

Rosemary oil has been linked to improved brain function, promoted hair growth, reduced pain and joint inflammation, and mood elevation. Those who are pregnant or have epilepsy or high blood pressure are advised to avoid it.

Bergamot oil, familiar to Earl Grey tea drinkers, has a fruity and floral aroma. Research published in peer-reviewed sources points to its ability to reduce anxiety, lift mood, and lower blood pressure.

Cedarwood oil offers antioxidant and antibacterial properties and is commonly found in insect repellents, shampoos, and deodorants. Studies suggest it can also support sleep quality and reduce anxiety.

How to Use Essential Oils Effectively

Method of application directly affects both the safety and the efficacy of essential oils. Dr. Lin recommends using only small amounts—typically just a few drops—and avoiding routine daily use to prevent the body from habituating and the oils from losing their effectiveness.

Aromatherapy via diffusion is the most common and accessible method. A diffuser disperses fine particles of the oil into the air, where they are inhaled. The aroma stimulates the central nervous system almost immediately, producing rapid changes in mood and stress response. Dry evaporation—a few drops on a cotton ball—and steam inhalation are effective alternatives.

Topical application allows the skin to absorb bioactive compounds. With very few exceptions (tea tree oil applied to acne is one), essential oils should always be diluted with a carrier oil—such as coconut, jojoba, or sweet almond oil—before skin contact. Undiluted essential oils frequently cause irritation, and some can cause burns.

Oral ingestion is strongly discouraged unless directed by a trained herbalist. Essential oils are extraordinarily concentrated, and even small amounts taken orally can damage the mucosal lining of the mouth, harm the liver, or cause neurological effects. Some culinary recipes call for specific oils like orange, but dosing must be carefully followed.

Safety Considerations Worth Taking Seriously

The potency that makes essential oils effective also makes them capable of harm when misused. Several important precautions apply across the board.

Always dilute before applying to skin. The standard recommendation is a 2% dilution—roughly 12 drops of essential oil per one ounce of carrier oil—for adults. For children and sensitive skin, a 1% dilution is safer.

Certain oils carry specific risks. Tea tree oil is neurotoxic and should not be diffused around small children or animals. Eucalyptus oil should not be used on or near children and can have dangerous side effects for pets. Citrus oils—including lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, lemongrass, and bergamot—increase photosensitivity. Avoid sun exposure on skin treated with these oils.

The NIEHS has conducted research into the potential endocrine-disrupting properties of lavender and tea tree oils. Their studies found that certain chemical components present in these oils—including eucalyptol, linalool, and 4-terpinenol—displayed hormonal activity in laboratory settings. Clinical cases have also reported a possible link between topical use of these oils and abnormal breast development in prepubescent children. The NIEHS advises the public to be aware of these findings, particularly regarding prolonged or concentrated topical use on young children.

Pregnant women, seniors, people with compromised immune systems, and those with conditions such as epilepsy or high blood pressure should consult a healthcare provider before using essential oils.

A Thoughtful Approach to Essential Oils

Essential oils occupy a legitimate and growing place in complementary health and wellness. Their chemical complexity gives them genuine functional properties—antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, mood-modulating—that a growing body of research continues to validate. They are not, however, cure-alls, and their concentration demands respect.

The best results come from selecting high-quality, pure essential oils from reputable sources, using them intentionally and sparingly, and always prioritizing safe application methods. Dilute before applying topically. Choose your diffusion setting carefully. And when questions about a specific health condition arise, consult a qualified healthcare professional before reaching for a bottle.
